We the Producers: Are Confused? Finding it hard to separate fact from myth? What is it that really counts in a carcass? Taste? Yes. Tenderness? Yes
How can we ever know that our bull selections - in regards to carcass - are the best we can possibly make? We've all read the advertisements saying: this breed has the Best MARBLING or Best CONVERSION, or Best GAIN, or Most MUSCLING, or companies telling us about the Best FEED or the Best YARD or the best IMPLANT. Each of these advertisements is probably true - independently. But how can we bring all the "carcass factors" together in one place - in the same environment (breeds, place, feed, weather, time). there is a situation that allows genetics to be the difference maker: it's called the GREAT WESTERN BEEF EXPO. Sterling, Colorado. The GREAT WESTERN BEEF EXPO has been running an independent carcass test for 28 years. In that time the tests have included over 660 pens consisting of more than 30 breeds. (It brings those breeds together who think they have the chance to compete.) Reducing each breed down to its ability to marble, convert and gain is done for us at the EXPO. The same rations are fed the same number of days in the same weather in the same place. A test such as this should give us producers carcass based answers. Results of the last 9 years:
And BRAUNVIEH have only competed for the last 8 years. In addition an award is given each year for carcasses that grade Choice or better with a Yield Grade of 1 or 2. Braunvieh have earned this award (Max Fulscher) on 23% of their entries in the last eight years. In the last eight years the closest competing breed has not earned this award on more than 3% or it's entries. YES, that's right BRAUNVIEH have ruled the
ultimate carcass contest!
